Moroccan Hospitality

IS IT EASY TO BE HOSTED?

Morocco is the third most host-friendly country in the world According to the World Economic Forum survey measuring the quality of being warm and welcoming to strangers. The survey was conducted in 2013 and was mainly based on countries' attitudes towards tourists. Only 20 out of 140 countries were categorized as 'very welcoming'.

It is easier to receive invitations from Moroccan families when travelling alone, especially in small villages. You can easily be invited to someone's home after talking to a shopkeeper or even a taxi driver, or just by asking a passenger for information.

Don't worry, the invitation is usually frank, and the host will be very happy to receive you. Being invited to a Moroccan family as a foreigner is a special occasion. There are a few things to avoid ensuring you are respectful and polite.

Here are some tips:

Clothing choice: It is important to dress appropriately, especially if you have been invited to a formal occasion. Avoid very short trousers, revealing clothing or anything that can sometimes be considered inappropriate in Moroccan culture. Wearing something unobtrusive and modest is appreciated.

Shoes: In Moroccan culture, it is customary to take off your shoes when entering a house. Follow the example of your host or hostess and ask if it is necessary to take off your shoes.

Respect religious traditions: Morocco is a country with a strong Islamic tradition. Respect religious customs and norms. Avoid alcohol or pork, for example, as these are not allowed in Islam. Always ask for advice if you are unsure about certain customs.

Meal habits: Moroccan meals are often convivial occasions where dishes are shared. It is polite to wait for your host or hostess to start eating before you start yourself. Also, try not to use your left hand while eating, as the right hand is considered clean.

Discuss politics and religion: It is best to avoid political or religious discussions unless you are sure your host or hostess is open to such conversations. These topics can be sensitive, and it is important to maintain a respectful and open attitude.

Questions

Remember that every family is different, and there is no harm in asking questions if you are unsure about certain customs or traditions. In general, Moroccans appreciate it if you show interest in their culture and traditions. Be respectful, be yourself and enjoy the hospitality offered to you. Enjoy your visit to Morocco!
